Monterey 2010: Auction Round Up

Whilst many of us around the world are fearing the return of a recession. Monterey car week once again bucked the trend with record auctions all week. RM Auctions always reserves its most prestigious cars for Saturday night during the Monterey car week, and this year's lineup of vehicles was one of the most impressive in recent history. No less than 14 cars broke the million dollar mark, although the highlight of the auction, a 1958 Ferrari 250 TR, failed to meet its reserve price despite a $10.7 million offer on the table. Gooding & Company, the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, achieved a new world record yesterday on the first eve of its prestigious two-day Pebble Beach Auction with a $7.26 Million sale of a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione. The final price of the car is the new world record for a LWB California Spider.*

Last night's automotive star will be followed by a long list of sparkling consignments for this evening's Sunday Auction, which include the 1928 Mercedes-Benz S Boattail Speedster, 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta SEFAC Hot Rod, 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza and 1995 McLaren F1. Two-day event makes a world record for Porsche and posts $18.6 million in sales. Bonhams & Butterfields celebrated the thirteenth anniversary of its renowned motorcar auction at the sunny Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley with resounding success. A world record for any Porsche sold at auction was achieved with the ex-Jurgen Neuhaus/Jurgen Barth 1972-73 European Interserie and David Hobbs/Mike Hailwood Gulf-JW Automotive team 1972-73 Porsche 917 Interserie Spyder neé 1970 Gulf-JWA Le Mans 917K Coupe realizing $3,965,000.
